Joe Klein Hates Bloggers <sniff>

Fri Apr 28, 2006 at 11:22:49 PM PDT

Well folks, it looks like our strong pressure on the alleged "liberal" occupying space over at Time magazine may have actually taken a toll behind the scenes.  Follow me below the fold and we'll examine and parse Klein's rhetorical tapdance in his latest column to see how full of it he really is...

http://www.time.com/...

Apprently we "intemperate" bloggers misinterpreted poor Joe (lots of "poor Joes" around right now it seems) and he is hurt that we would attack him and call him, well, batshit crazy for suggesting that nuking people is a good idea.

My third mistake was less profound: My remarks opened the door for misinterpretation, especially by left-wing bloggers. Within hours, The Nation's perpetually intemperate Eric Alterman was "reporting" that I'd come out in favor of "nuking Iran." Which opened the door for another tedious chorus of "Klein Is not a liberal" and other, more mangy imprecations. Let me give credit where it's due: I probably would not be writing this were it not for all the left-wing screeching. The Stephanopoulos moment came and went ephemerally, as TV moments do, leaving a slight, queasy residue -- I knew that I hadn't explained myself adequately, but that happens a lot on television. So thanks, frothing bloggers, for calling me on my mistake. You can, at times, be a valuable corrective.

Well, at least it's good to know that Joe doesn't think that nuclear first strikes are really a good idea, you just want to keep a crazy glint in your eye for the enemy.  A funny thing happened on the way to his mea culpa, though, as Mr. Klein gets sidetracked by an anti-blogger rant because we actually had the gall to call bullshit.

At other times, though, your vitriol just seems uninformed, malicious and disproportionate. You seem to believe that since I'm not a lock-step liberal -- and we can talk about what a liberal actually is some other time -- I'm some sort of creepy, covert conservative. Of course, most conservatives consider me a liberal. I call myself a moderate -- a radical or flaming moderate, take your pick -- because in this witlessly overheated political environment, you've got to call yourself something. But the conservatives do have a point: I disagree with Ronald Reagan's famous formulation, "Government is part of the problem, not part of the solution."

Well, since I'm all for giving credit where it's due, I'll at least congratulate Joe for realizing that the governing philosophy of modern Republicans isn't worth much more than a flabby hunk of whale shit.  Crack the champagne bottles, folks!  Joe Klein believes we should have a government that does things!  Apparently this qualifies him as an open-minded liberal of some kind, despite his usual approach of resident "liberal" Republican apologist.  For the money quote of the jackass, however, we have to turn here:

George W. Bush has proven that governing from the right can't work; but governing from the left won't work either. The only way that real change -- a universal health-care system (along the lines enacted by Mitt Romney in Massachusetts), a real alternative energy plan, progressivity in taxation and entitlement reform, a cooperative non-toxic foreign policy--will come is through coalitions built from the center out. And those coalitions will only flourish in a public atmosphere of civility, humanity and compromise.

Uh huh, so apparently that magical center that is so well-informed as to the latest Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie happenings will magically give us every progressive idea out there that comes from, well, the left.  Odd that ideas the jackasses at Redstate would call socialist are going to materialize from the center, but then again, I don't live in Joe Klein magical happy land.  Apparently in that world, bending over and telling George W. Bush and Rupert Murdoch, "PLEASE SIR MAY I HAVE ANOTHER!" helps to foster civility, humanity, and compromise.  Good story, but alas, I live in America circa 2006, which is anything but magical happy land (except in George W. Bush's head of course, but that's a diary for another time).

Anyway, not exactly brainbuster style analysis here, just wanted to give you all a Lewis Black style, "hey, look at what the jackass just said."

put a copy in my workspace for tomorrow.  But you nailed all the issues.  How pompous for Klein to pressume he exists on some pinnacle of rathonality, civility, compromise, and common sense "moderate" liberalism, while all of us frothing left wing bloggers just don't get it.

His implication that those of us concerned about bringing President Bush's transgressions against our consitution and truth by calling for impeachment are pathologically disabled, lacking in civility, and unable to compromise for effective political progress is really sad.

I saw a clue of the underlying dysfunctionality of traditional media that enabled this Administration to do so much damage to our country but couldn't quite put it together as well as you have.

      Keep up the good work.

do some fine work in the past. My comments may have gone too far, but there is enough of a twinge of self-rightous arragance that made me angry.

But probably not more than I've been quilty of myslef. But it doesn't hurt to raise the hypotheses up for collective reflection which I think Dem partisan does a good job of.

when it comes to the blog world.  I think it is fear.  But the thing that makes me really wonder is why they, living in their insulated NYC or DC worlds don't see that fighting the republicans on their terms is the only way to win back any ground.

I didn't mean to criticize you.  I meant that he had taken a pretty good beating here at dkos in general lately.

        •  I know, but I am a person who can benefit greatly (0+ / 0-)

from every opportunity for self reflection I can get.

And from long and painful experience I've learned that every criticism I've every made against another person turns out to be equally valid for myself.

And sadly, in exact direct proportion to the intensity with which I make them.

So I feel sorry for Joe Klein as sort of pro-active sympathy for myself.

And what does this mean with regard to my ruthless, scathing, persistent, unforgiving, and even nssty attacks agaisnt President Bush and everyone in his adminstration?

          Frightening eh?

I'll grant you Klein is not the Devil incarnate.  He is instead the self-styled "moderate" who, after interviewing the Devil, will say something to the effect of, "Well, the American-hating Left may say all sorts of extreme things about the Devil, but having met with him myself, I can tell you he's actually a thoughtful world leader with many telling insights into human foibles."

... why is his argument in the style of a conservative?

He's ignoring everything his critics actually said, and creating a straw-man opponent of viewless, wild-eyed "radicals."  Impeaching George Bush is the same as blindly worshipping Tom DeLay?  Gimme a flying break, Joe.

Maybe if you stopped whining for a moment and actually read any of those blogs being so mean to you, you might learn something.  Or maybe not.  When you know everything already, you can't learn anything.

    •  Klein is a conservative's liberal (0+ / 0-)

He fills that weird media niche of the self-avowed liberal who makes his living attacking liberals.  There is no conservative equivalent for this, a further sign that the "liberal" media is anything but.

From the last boxed paragraph, "The only way that real change--a universal healthcare system......,entitlement reform.,,,ect.,
Just what does he mean by entitlement. What needs to be reformed is our tax system(particularly the "entitlements" given to the oil industry) that is heavily weighted in favor of the very wealthy. When these pundits parrot RW talking points about entitlements what they are talking about is stealing the money from the Social Security trust by reneging on their promise to pay back what has been borrowed from every working American. Whenever these hacks and RW thieves start to talk about entitlements they should be called on their bullshit.

how about the entitlements the rich feel they aught to have, say like the luxury tax repealed.  How about the entitlement the politicians in Washington feel they deserve, such as their healthcare and free rides, food, shelter and so on.  How about the corporations who feel they are entitled to any tax rebates, abatements, giveaways and perks that local, state and federal governments throw at them.

Joe Klein is a schmuck.  The sooner people like him are removed from any position of power, stature or influence the sooner we can go about the business of building a better world for all of us.

if he allows the Right Wing to frame the agenda he's giving up in advance and is a putz. Entitlement my ass, they are talking specifically about medicare and social security. I have been paying into these programs since I first started working. There is a enough of a surplus in gov't IOUs to pay projected benefits at the current level until 2041.They just don't want to pay back what they've borrowed from all of us. Medicare is different. The government is in thrall to the insurance industry just like they are to the oil business. The whole system needs to be reformed and replaced with a single payer program controlled by the government not the insurance industry.

    He admires Bush for consistency.

It's amazing.  How can someone who is PURPORTEDLY intelligent, who is actually literate, mistake "consistency" for "blind obstinancy and simple inability to reconsider how wrong you are"?
