CT-04: In Praise of a Green

Mon Oct 23, 2006 at 03:03:28 PM PDT

I'm not usually one to congratulate Greens on their political strategy, given that their strategy essentially consists of siphoning off center-left votes and ensuring Republican victories. Sometimes they go even further and happily suckle at the Republican teat, fully aware that they are pawns in the GOP's game. (See the Carl Romanelli tag for details.)

PA-Sen: Polling round-up; Casey leads by 21??

Fri Sep 22, 2006 at 12:37:46 PM PDT

There are three polls on the Pennsylvania Senate race out in the ether
right now, all showing very different results. The good news: All three
firms agree that Casey is leading Santorum. But by how much?

Mayor O'Connor of Pittsburgh died tonight

Fri Sep 01, 2006 at 07:04:22 PM PDT

Mayor Bob O'Connor of Pittsburgh died tonight, almost two months after being diagnosed with primary central nervous system lymphoma, a rare form of brain cancer. He was 61 years old.

PA-Sen: GOP's Romanelli dealt one-two punch

Thu Aug 24, 2006 at 03:25:56 PM PDT

Two different courts have rejected two Greens Of Pennsylvania lawsuits in as many days, essentially pulling the life-support on Carl Romanelli's campaign against Democrat Bob Casey.

PA-Sen: Rendell Tries to Atone

Wed Aug 09, 2006 at 12:45:02 PM PDT

Wait, there are other races going on? Surely I jest, right?

Not only that, there's PA-Sen news that doesn't involve the Green Party, Markos's four or five FP posts aside.

PA-Gov: Independent Enters the Race

Thu Apr 13, 2006 at 11:52:02 AM PDT

The major party field for Pennsylvania's gubernatorial field has already been set. Ed Rendell doesn't have a primary challenger, and the only excitement on the Dem side so far has been whether we'll get our loopy Lieutenant Governor back, or whether Pittsburgh pol Valerie Roberts will get the nod.

Lynn Swann has also smooth sailing until May 17. The former NFL player was contested by Bill Scranton, the 1986 GOP nominee, and state Senator Jeff Piccola, but both have dropped out of the race.

It's been a tight one (the lastest Strategic Vision has at it 44-42 Rendell, and the margin has rarely been higher than five points either way), and it's about to get crazier.

PA-7: Curt Weldon's a Total Asshole

Wed Apr 05, 2006 at 02:27:09 PM PDT

Poor Curt. It was bad enough that he drew a hugely high-profile challenger in Vice-Admiral Joe Sestak (ret.), a Fighting Dem and 31-year veteran of the United States Navy. But just a few days ago, Sestak announced that he had raised over $400,000 in just 60 days - a lot of people believe that he has a very good chance at knocking off at Weldon in this suburban Philly district, and they're putting their money where their mouth is.

Weldon's response to this turn of events? Total panic mode.

Fantasy Straw Poll

Mon Mar 20, 2006 at 01:49:33 PM PDT

Every time Markos posts a straw poll, people complain that one candidate or another isn't included. I'm not really sure why - I'm sure that if, say Al Gore wants to step in, being left out of a single internet straw-poll isn't going to prove to be a drag on his campaign.

PA-Gov: The Running-Mate

Wed Mar 08, 2006 at 05:02:34 PM PDT

Well, it's official: Joe Hoeffel is out of the Lieutenant-Governor's race in Pennsylvania. He announced his withdrawal today, a day after he announced his candidacy. He apparently did so at the request of Governor Ed Rendell, who has voiced his support for the incumbent, Catherine Baker Knoll. There's likely to be some discussion over Hoeffel's decision and Rendell's actions, and what it means for Joe's future, but I'd like to focus on the immediate: Who is going to be our nominee this November?

PA-Sen: Conservatives pissed at Santorum

Mon Oct 03, 2005 at 03:17:51 PM PDT

We here in Pennsylvania let a golden opportunity slip by in the spring of 2004. There wasn't much back-and-forth in the Democratic primary - Kerry already had it sewn up, Hoeffel was running unopposed, and the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia mayoral races were either over or just beginning.

PA-Sen: Yet another poll

Thu Sep 29, 2005 at 04:39:55 PM PDT

You know, if it weren't for this race I'd have no excuse to write diaries. Thanks, Rick.

Allentown Morning Call/Muhlenberg College. Sept. 18-25. MoE 4.5%.

Head-to-head

Bob Casey 37%

Rick Santorum 29%

Undecided 31%

If those numbers seem strange to you, you're not alone. More on the flip side.

PA-SEN: Santorum takes Bush to task

Thu Sep 22, 2005 at 10:15:09 AM PDT

That's the headline of this Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story.

Two reasons why this is important, below the fold.

PA-Sen, Gov: Casey, Rendell have big leads

More below the jump, including Ed Rendell's numbers and some other observations.

Santorum: Sexual Abuse Was Consensual

Mon Jul 18, 2005 at 02:27:40 PM PDT

Rick Santorum's unhinged mouth is the gift that keeps on giving. Whether it's calling Democrats Nazis, publicly lecturing on bestiality, or complaining about those sinful women working outside the home, every week seems to bring a new and offensive comment from my esteemed junior Senator.

New Break in Delay PAC Investigation

Sat Feb 05, 2005 at 07:35:01 PM PDT

From Burnt Orange Report.

It appears the Austin American-Statesman has dug up more evidence indicating that Texans for a Republican Majority, Maj. Leader Tom Delay's PAC, used corporate donations for political purposes in violation of Texas law.

This article directly links the Texas Association of Business, a corporate-sponsored group, and TRMPAC. Delay has denied that TAB and TRMPAC have ever worked together, but they're both linked to a California phone bank which targeted likely Republicans back during the 2002 midterms.

The whole situation is necessarily complicated, but the article has a nice bullet-point list of the particulars. TRMPAC and TAB used corporate donations to identify likely Republicans, and used that list to direct-mail and phone-bank them. And there's a long paper trail proving it.

Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle has been investigating this for two years, and this may be the break he's been looking for. He managed to get indictments against several Delay associates back in Sept., but there's been little (public) progress since then.

Lieberman new UN Ambassador?

Thu Feb 03, 2005 at 05:37:20 PM PDT

After Joementum apparently summoned enough guts to refuse the DHS spot, Wikinews now claims that Bush is offering Sen. Lieberman the Ambassador to the United Nations spot. Unconfirmed - anyone else hear this?

If true, I don't know how I'd feel. I'm confident that Connecticut would elect another Dem, and I'd be thrilled to have Joe out of the Senate if his replacement has a (D) after his/her name. But it would sicken me to see, right after the Gonzales fight, a Democratic senator kowtow to Republican foreign policy.

Should I Enlist?

Sat Nov 06, 2004 at 09:42:05 PM PDT

This has been weighing on me for a while. I want to say straight-out that I despise George W. Bush and his foreign policy, and lament the mess that he has created in Iraq. The invasion was the single major factor that kicked me off the fence and into the hardcore Democratic camp.

And despite that, I'm seriously considering enlisting in the PA National Guard.
